Whygo2 Kota Kinabalu?
Letsgo2 employees have travelled extensively to the destinations we feature. Here are the five main reasons they would consider a visit to Kota Kinabalu.
It has it all!
The capital of Malaysian Borneo is Kota Kinabalu or locally known as KK and is named after the imposing Mount Kinabalu which creates a breathtaking backdrop to this unique city on the South China Sea. Kota Kinabalu offers the excitement and convenience of a city and also offers the possibilities of relaxing stays in luxurious beach resorts or makes an ideal base to explore all this beautiful destination has to offer.
Lots to do!
Whether you prefer to spend your time soaking up the sun and being pampered in world class resorts or to be more active Kota Kinabalu has something for everyone. Kinabalu National Park is a wonderland for outdoor enthusiasts. Hikers will love the opportunity to climb the 4095m Mount Kinabalu and watch the sunrise over an awe inspiring view. Visitors can enjoy more moderate trekking and visit the Poring Hot Springs. There is also the opportunity to go white water rafting on the Kiulu River where there are rapids for all levels to enjoy. Some of the resorts also boast impressive golf courses so it is well worth bringing your clubs especially if you choose to stay at the Sutera Harbour Resort, the Nexus or the Shangri-La Rasa Ria.
Orangutans
The lush rain forest island of Borneo is home to the Orang Utan. It is possible to view these fascinating creatures near to Kota Kinabalu at the nature reserve by the Shangri-La Rasa Ria Resort. A great way to get close is to take a day trip to the East of Sabah by a short flight where you can experience the unspoilt rainforest and see orphaned Orangutans at the Sepilok Orangutan sanctuary as they prepare for their journey back into the wild.
Beaches
The area surrounding Kota Kinabalu has some of the most breathtaking fine white sandy beaches to be found in the South China Sea. The crystal clear water makes for the ideal setting for snorkelling or diving where you can experience the spectacular coral and amazing marine life. Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park is only 15 minutes boat ride from the city and is a must for all visitors. The pristine beaches at the Nexus Resort and at the Shangri-La Rasa Ria seem to go on forever and are the ideal choice for a lazy holiday in the sun.
Culture
There is so much to explore in the vibrant city of Kota Kinabalu. Although it is a modern and bustling metropolis, Kota Kinabalu also has retained much of its traditional charm. The night markets offer a great way to meet the local people and put your bargaining skills to the test as you haggle over the vast array of souvenirs. To have a real Borneo experience, take the boat trip to a heritage village where you can see the Bajau way of life which has barely changed in the past 2 centuries.
