Whygo2 Penang?
Letsgo2 employees have travelled extensively to the destinations we feature. Here are the five main reasons they would consider a visit to Penang.
Culture
Penang is a multicultural Island enriched by various ethnic communities co-existing in harmony. Made up of 3 main racial groups, Malays, Chinese and Indians, there is always a celebration going on, be it special events, festivals, the birthdays of gods and deities or religious occasions. Penang sees a kaleidoscope of colourful and exciting festivals and celebrations through out the year. Georgetown, the capital of Penang is where you can best experience this mix of culture. A walk through the city can take you past guilds, mosques, temples, clanhouses, district associations, sanghams and lodges which are the open museums of migration and cultural history in Penang.
Food
Penang offers a wide variety of exotic dishes and delicious cuisine. There is such an array of restaurants to choose from, each offering an unforgettable dining experience. Seafood is a must try while here with amazing fish restaurants to eat in and if you like Indian food, you must try some of the restaurants in Georgetown.
Scenery
Penang is famous for its beautiful beaches, mainly found on the northern coast. When visiting these beaches you will soon realise why Penang was once known as the "Pearl of the Orient". Not to be forgotten is Taman Negara Pulau Pinang, the National Park in Penang. It is one of the few forested areas left on the island and is only minutes away from Georgetown where you can see the emerald green hills meeting the golden sandy beaches.
Shopping
Shopping in Penang is an exciting experience. The famous Night Markets are a must - each night the markets move location and traders set up make shift stalls which are lit up with florescent tubes. Here you can buy anything from household goods to trinkets or designer clothes as well as fresh produce like cakes and food. It is the place to go if you're looking for a good bargain - remember haggling is customary and a great way of getting the price you want.
Sightseeing
With plenty to see and do, Penang has some thing to offer everyone. If history and culture is your thing then a trip in to Georgetown is a must. Rich in history Georgetown holds the largest collections of 19th and early 20th century buildings in Southeast Asia. Take a walk down Beach Street to witness some of the best examples of colonial architecture, or visit one of the numerous Temples, Ke Lok Si Temple being one of the largest and a major landmark in Penang. If it is adventure you are looking for, take a trip to Mutiara Taman Negara rainforest where you can go jungle trekking, canopy walking, take a cruise, go cave exploring or take a night jungle walk. When the sun goes down there is still plenty to keep you entertained with many restaurants, bars and clubs to visit. Upper Penang Road in Georgetown is a prime night spot attracting the young the lively or try E-gate - one of the newest entertainment hotspots catering for all age groups.
